Glenard offers a wide range of extra-curricula activities that broaden students' perspectives and gives them insights into new fields of knowledge. Throughout the year the following are offered:

Cultural Activities

  • Book Club : each month a book is selected and reviewed. Opinions are many and varied!
Some of the upcoming titles for 2008 / 2009 are:
    • Embers
    • The Kite Runner

  • 'Can Do' Workshop : an annual event which usually spans an entire week-end and which looks at topics of interest to students. The workshops are attended by students from Ireland and abroad.
    .
  • Guest speakers : links with colleges and the professions are fomented by means of periodic lectures given by experts in their fields.
  • Get-togethers by students for students about their countries, hobbies and other areas of interest.

Community Activities

  • Students at Glenard traditionally undertake to visit the elderly and infirm living in the Clonskeagh area. The purpose of these visits is to offer those in need a friendly conversation and interest. Students, in their turn, benefit as they become more aware of the needs of others and are encouraged to respond to those needs in solidarity and with generosity.
    .
  • Computer Club for Older People: The purpose of the club is to enable older people to learn how to use computers, the Internet and E-mail. The main instructors are young people who undertake this work as volunteers. If you would like to participate, please contact Glenard.
This project - Building Digital Bridges Between Generations - is funded by a grant from the Department of the Taoiseach.

Spiritual Activities

Glenard offers Christian formation to all who are interested. The religious formation is entrusted to Opus Dei, a Personal Prelature of the Catholic Church. Opus Dei was founded in 1928 by St. Josemaría Escrivá. He wrote abundantly over the course of his life, escrivaworks. The books published during his lifetime or immediately after his death have seen numerous reprinting and translations, bringing to millions the light and warmth of the Christian faith. Opus Dei helps ordinary men and women find holiness in their everyday work and family life. In Glenard, this means helping students discover a deeper meaning in their studies and the richness of the Catholic faith.

UNIV Conference in Rome

Every year, students at Glenard have the opportunity to take part in the well-known UNIV university congress in Rome. The conference, first held in 1968, is organised by the Institute for University Cooperation ( ICU ), with the aim of encouraging the thoughts and initiatives of students regarding key issues, in order to shape the future of our world. The congress features internationally recognised speakers, along with papers, posters and videos selected by the Scientific Committee from students all over the world.

Social Projects Abroad

Glenard has organised social projects in Kenya, Lithuania, Israel and Poland. The projects are always carried out in conjunction with local NGO's that have a good knowledge of the needs of the beneficiaries targeted in each case. The projects bring together students from different countries who, along with the Irish volunteers, work side by side for several weeks during the summer. Each project involves months of prior preparation, including fundraising, team-building and, where relevant, basic language skills.

English Summer Course

With more than 45 years experience, Glenard Summer Course is long established as one of Ireland's most prestigious English language courses. The course combines top quality teaching and a carefully prepared programme of activities. The students are prepared for the international recognised Trinity College London exams.
